Wednesday 8 February, at 7 pm
At this meeting, writer Alissa Ganíeva will discuss the role of women and Islam in Russia and Dagestan, from where she hails, as well as gender roles in the North Caucasus and today’s religious challenges in this region. In 2009, Ganíeva won the Debut literary prize with Salaam, Dalgat!, and is also the author of the novel translated into Catalan La muntanya de la festa and English (Holiday Mountain). The meeting will be chaired by Marta Ter, researcher at the Eurasia Observatory.
Holiday Mountain is a novel that revolves around Xamil, a young journalist from Makhachkala, the capital, and his reaction to the rumours circulating that the Russian government is building a wall to separate Muslim areas in the Caucasus from the rest of Russia.
*The event will take place in English.
