When I first arrived at Olot, I thought this was just a small country town. But the next day I looked around the town and found that it was not just small. Olot is famous for terracotta and still produces and exports many terracotta in Sants museum. Also it was very interesting nature that surrounded by 42 volcanoes. So this village has diverse terrain and natural ecology. Based on this natural environment, the city is a major place for agriculture and livestock industry. For that reason, we could see companies operating with biomass as their main energy source. A case of restaurant B-CREK, they only use the local production when they making food to reduces CO2. LC Paper, which produces zero carbon emissions when producing paper. Wattia is a completely energetically self-sufficient space through the use of renewable energy sources which combines groundwater and solar heat. Many companies seek to reduce carbon emissions through renewable energy. But I think it’s not just because of they have an good environment of biomass, but also because of the attitude of looking at the future. I could see that people have a mature awareness. Most of the people in here have an imagination of future and have deep insight into the current problems. During the residency I went out to town to meet people and work or talk with them. I heard that 10 years ago, young people did not live here. But now I was able to meet many young people in the city. I think that’s because people tried. They think that they had to change and they thought about the future.
Above all, It was great to conversations with other residents. We sharing in each field issues a deep consensus and widened our vision. I was able to think about the environmental problem more widely. I found some perspective of the Amazon indigenous people. Also I had forgotten how many environmental problems from food. I will continue thinking about where it come from. They reminded me of the need to prepare for future generations. Although the period of residency was short, I was able to return to Korea with a shared awareness of those issues. I made some plan to work on sustainable energy and the environment in Faber. If I make it all, I will write down their names to remember here.
